Letter to Irish Times

Sir,

Your paper today (8th November) reports how our Government lashed out €30,000 to a woman who had an abortion in the UK because her baby allegedly had a “fatal foetal abnormality.”. The UN Human Rights Committee had judged in her favour and ritually derided Ireland for its laws protecting unborn children, like other human beings.

That UN Committee has no authority to enforce its decisions, which as your journalist quite rightly reports, contradicts other UN committees and most certainly the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Had this abortion taken place in Ireland, it would have been clearly in violation of our Constitution and laws. Yet for the second time our “law and order Government” rewards the killing of babies. Such an action must clearly be unconstitutional and illegal.

Yours etc
